Last week, my husband and five other guys from our church went to Haiti on a mission trip to help in the relief effort. Throughout the week, they kept us up to date with pictures and facebook notes. (You can find the page on facebook at Calvary Haiti Mission.)
I knew he would come home changed and he did.
The orphan crisis in Haiti is overwhelming. 70% of Haiti’s population is children. Of these children, 300,000 will be abandoned this year. An estimated 5,000 children will die in the month of November alone. That’s 167 children every day. That’s five to six kindergarten classrooms in one school dead in a day, to put it into perspective.
We’re now looking into ways we can become involved in helping Haiti’s orphans on an ongoing basis. Our first step is to sponsor a child. We’ll be sponsoring children through http://www.operationlovethechildrenofhaiti.com, an orphanage Brian and the team visited while in Haiti. It is well-run, but in desperate need. We are also pursuing the creation of a non-profit corp which will raise funds to provide resources for this orphanage and others. We’ll start with this one first. We hope to have it operational within the next 2-3 weeks. Stay tuned for that.
